No WCT, a divisão é outra.

A fénix
"Well, Ryan Hardy won the Pipeline pro in 3-5 foot waves yesterday. The final didn't disappoint any of the spectators as all finalists went for it big time.
Second place went to Frenchman Pierre Luis Costes, who opened up the final with an 8.50, giving Hardy a huge task to take the victory.
Hardy waited until the 18th minute of the half hour final to strike.
A long deep tube ride followed by a gigantic roll netted him a 9.43 average that left him still lingering in second position, and then within a few minutes he found another tube and this time back-flipped out of the end bowl.
That sealed the deal for Hardy, also giving him the lead for this year's world tour.
Third place went to Brazilian Guilherme Tamega and fourth place was Dave Winchester from Australia.
ABOUT OUR WINNER
After the presentation the Australians gathered like hens in a chook pen at the Pipeline park, and let's just say the party was officially started. A lot of alcohol was consumed, a lot of love in the air and it was a great night to be Australian.
Hardy himself was stoked, and I was truly happy for him. He has jumped a pretty big hurdle to get himself to where he currently is. A couple of years ago he started hallucinating and was diagnosed with bipolar
(which was made public last year).
When and I first found out I flew to West Oz to visit him in the "Nut House" (as he comically refers to it). It was a real experience for me. Without going into detail of what was he was going through, I really felt bad for his situation and couldn't believe what he was going through.
Last night in the midst of the celebrations I reflected back to the more challenging part of his life and was stunned. It's like a fairy tale, and incredibly inspiring to see him rise from where he was. Half the other people that were in the ward with Hardy back then, are probably still there now, seriously.
But it's not Hardy's ability to ride waves that got him to where he is now - it's his character. The character that got his sanity back, the character that got him back on tour, and the character that pushed his surfing to take the title yesterday. The character that has him on top of the 2009 ladder for a world title.
Congratulations Hardy, you really do deserve it!!! But you would... actually SHOULD... probably already know that."

Chacota
A ideia nunca me pareceu brilhante.

As expectativas eram altas.

Jamie O'Brien
in Stab
“It’s not like I’ve been out there practising. Last year I paddled out at Pipe and got a few sick ones. And the year before I got a sick right. I was like, ‘Well fuck; I’m getting sick ones on the boog, why not? I don’t see why I can’t make a few heats. Next year I think I will make the final.”
Such confidence from any other person would be nauseating. But as Stewart says “Jamie rides Pipe, in my opinion, as well as anyone ever has.” Recently, Jamie was on the receiving end of a tutorial from the master, in the line-up, engaging with Stewart in “technical dialogue about how to take drops on a bodyboard.”
He also says however, that his confidence in part stems from the ineptitude of many past competitors in the contest. “They don’t get that barrelled. Some are really good, they get really barrelled. But some that I have seen in the comp - I’ve been kinda shaking my head for the past five years.”
If Jamie does succeed, it won’t be to a tickertape parade down the Kam Highway. In 2005, that same man, Kainoa McGee, bettered Dane Reynolds, Rob Machado and Dustin Barca on his way to a semi-final birth in the four-star Pipeline WQS. Jamie’s success will do little more than even the ledger. So does he have a chance?
Professional bodyboarder and a veteran of numerous Pipeline contests Jose Marquina believes so. “At the end of the day a pit is a pit, and you get ten pointers out pipe for getting barrelled. If it’s 6 to 8 foot he’s as good a chance as anybody.” Jamie’s only move is an el rollo. And he concedes his strategy consists simply of picking the right waves, "dragging dick and getting deep". Though when it comes to pickin’ ‘em, Jamie is the John West of pipe.
Player agrees. “He knows Pipe better than most. He will pick the best waves he can. It’s gonna be pretty exciting.”

Ora ai está!
Viana do Castelo, Praia Grande, Peniche e Nazaré.

In one of the most extraordinary twists in modern Pro surfing, Pipeline local Jamie O’Brien has been granted a start in the seeded rounds of the Turbo Bodyboards Pipeline Pro.
This is the first event on the International Bodyboarding Association Men’s World Tour for 2009 and carries a Grand Slam status as well as double points towards the championship.
International General Manager of the IBA Terry McKenna says that O’Brien started his surfing career on a bodyboard as a kid before making the transition to fibreglass.
“Apparently Jamie was into it when he was younger and still feels keen enough about it to have a start in the event. Word on the street is that he can still hold his rail in and ride deep in the barrel at Pipe, so it will be amazing to watch ” said McKenna.
“Jamie is one of the most innovative surfers in the world and an astounding waterman so I would not put it past him to blow some minds at his home break.”
“I can only imagine that this will be one of the most highly anticipated heats of the year and watched by everyone in the surfing community. It’s a bold move and a first for the IBA ” said McKenna.
Jamie O’Brien had a different sort of sandpit to play in as a child. His backyard was Pipeline and no one knows this break better than him. This is supported by the fact that he was the youngest surfer to ever win the Pipeline Masters ASP event and recently won the backdoor shootout.
O’Brien will be seeded into the rounds 33-80 in a field of 144.
The waiting period begins on Feb 17th and continues till Feb 27th with the best three days being used for competition
